I froze.
“What little girl?”
“Come here, and you’ll understand.”
I arrived at Richard’s mansion around noon.
His nurse opened the door.
“Mr. Richard is expecting you.”
I entered the living room.
My father-in-law was sitting in an armchair.
On the table in front of him were several documents, a pair of tiny red shoes, and a little pink dress.
“Whose things are those?” I asked.
Richard didn’t answer.
Instead, he placed a photograph on the table.
It showed a little girl, about six years old.
She had brown hair and large blue eyes.
And strangely enough, she looked remarkably like me.
“Who is she?”
“Her name is Lily.”
“What does she have to do with me?”
Tears filled Richard’s eyes.
“That child is my granddaughter.”
I was stunned.
Daniel and I had never had children.
Thirty years earlier, I had become pregnant, but my pregnancy had ended in a terrible complication. Afterward, the doctors told me I would never be able to have another child.
