“Then let him!”
“You don’t understand. Our house is in his name. So is the company. We could end up on the street.”
I stared at my husband.
The man I had shared my life with for more than three decades was apparently willing to humiliate me for money.
“I’m leaving tomorrow,” I said.
But he suddenly grabbed my hand.
“My father chose you, Emily. Only you.”
A chill ran down my spine.
“Why?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
The following morning, my phone rang.
It was my father-in-law, Richard.
He was eighty years old, a former businessman, extremely wealthy, and accustomed to getting whatever he wanted.
“Emily, please come see me today.”
“Your son told me everything.”
“No,” he replied. “Daniel hasn’t told you anything.”
“I have no intention of discussing your disgusting proposal.”
The old man remained silent for several seconds.
Then he said:
“If you don’t come today, a little girl could lose her last chance.”
