My husband left his medication at home, so I stopped by his office to bring it to him. But when I asked the receptionist to call him downstairs, she said, "Ma'am, your husband has been on leave for the past week."

Which is exactly why I was sitting in a car park at ten past nine not able to get my hands steady.

I picked up my phone to ring him and have it out.

And then I stopped.

Because I thought: if he has looked at me every morning for five days and lied, properly, to my face, then what is one more going to cost him?

So instead I sent six words.

You left your medication at home.

No question mark. No kiss on the end — which he will not have noticed, and which I noticed myself doing.

It came back inside about thirty seconds.

Work's mental this morning. I'll grab it tonight. x

I read that about four times.

Up to that point there was still a version in my head where this was nothing. A thing with HR. A surprise he was arranging. Something stupid.

That message finished it.
