I recognized the same fear I had once lived with.
After a long silence, I said:
“Jessica, you still have a choice about the kind of life you want to live.”
The wedding never happened.
A few weeks later, Mike tried to speak to me again.
This time, he apologized not only to me but also to the children.
I didn’t take him back.
But I agreed that he could gradually rebuild his relationship with the children, provided he consistently fulfilled his responsibilities as their father.
A year passed.
I opened a small family catering business, where I employed two other single mothers.
My weight had barely changed.
I was still exhausted sometimes. Sometimes my hair was messy, and I didn’t have time to take care of my appearance.
But I was no longer ashamed of the way I looked.
One Sunday, I took a new family photograph with my three children.
