It turned out that Mike had accumulated enormous debts while organizing their wedding.
He had also told Jessica that he was planning to take primary responsibility for the children so that nothing would interfere with their future relationship.
Jessica had learned that Mike had been mocking my appearance in front of his friends and intended to use me as an example of his former miserable life during his wedding speech.
“I agreed to the photograph idea,” she admitted. “I thought it would be a beautiful moment of reconciliation. But then I realized he wanted to make you look small in front of everyone.”
I stared at her for a long moment.
“Then why are you here now?”
“Because yesterday he told me that after we got married, I’d have to quit my job. He said his wife must always look beautiful and never gain weight.”
