We didn't talk again.

When we got to the hospital, Jake was sitting in the hallway with his face in his hands.

As soon as he saw us, he got up.

For a terrible second I thought I'd blame the boy again.

But instead, Daniel hugged him.

Then he started crying over my husband's shoulder.

Finally, a doctor went out to talk to us.

Emily was stable.

Those words were about to make my legs stop holding me.

The doctor explained that his symptoms had required an urgent evaluation, because intense pain and fainting during a  pregnancy They could indicate a serious complication. Fortunately, she had been quickly taken to the hospital and was now under close surveillance.

Then the doctor looked us straight in the eye.

“He’s very young,” he said softly. Whatever conversations you have to hold later, you need to feel safe right now.

Daniel lowered his head.

A few minutes later we were allowed to see her.

Emily looked incredibly small in that hospital bed.
