“My Boss Told Me, ‘If You Take a Picture With Me Tonight, I’ll Triple Your Salary Tomorrow.’ I Agreed. But the Next Morning, When I Arrived at Work, I Saw My Photograph on the Office Door. With Tears in My Eyes, I Burst Into My Boss’s Office…”

It read:

“EMILY WILSON — DIRECTOR OF SOCIAL PROGRAMS.”

“We’re launching a new foundation to help families dealing with serious illnesses. And I want you to lead it.”

I couldn’t believe my eyes.

“But what about the photograph?”

“It’s part of the foundation’s first official announcement. Did you read the entire poster?”

I shook my head.

Through my tears, I had only seen the first few lines.

Richard continued:

“Underneath, it says: ‘Because starting today, Emily will help change the lives of hundreds of families.’”

Then he handed me a second envelope.

“And this is our foundation’s first decision.”

I opened it.

Inside was confirmation that my mother’s medical expenses would be covered in full.

My knees nearly gave way.

“Why are you doing all this for me?”

Richard’s eyes filled with tears.

“Twenty years ago, my daughter became seriously ill. I had money, but I failed to be there for her when she needed me most. She passed away. After that, I realized that sometimes the greatest gift you can give someone is simply being there at the right moment.”
