The secretary lowered her eyes.
“Those were the instructions.”
My throat tightened.
Were they firing me?
But why had the director promised to triple my salary the night before?
Perhaps the photograph had simply been an excuse.
Perhaps someone was trying to accuse me of having an inappropriate relationship with the director.
Just then, I overheard two female employees talking.
“The poor girl still doesn’t know anything.”
“And the director has already signed all the documents.”
Tears filled my eyes.
I hurried upstairs to the second floor.
Two unfamiliar men in dark suits were standing outside Richard’s office.
One of them tried to stop me.
“Miss, you can’t go in.”
“Let me through!”
“The director is busy.”
But I couldn’t hold myself back any longer.
With tears streaming down my face, I pushed the door open and burst inside.
“Why are you treating me like this? What have I ever done to you?”
