And playing softly in the background was the song David and I had danced to when we first met.
Then a woman approached me with three children.
It was Emily.
She took my hands.
“Your husband gave me the chance to live, Susan. Because of him, I became a mother. These three children are here today because a stranger stopped to help me twelve years ago.”
I burst into tears.
Her youngest daughter hugged me, and for the first time in years, I felt something I’d believed was lost forever.
Hope.
That evening, I sang with my old choir.
My voice trembled at first, but soon the familiar melodies filled the room.
Jake watched from the back, smiling through his tears.
Later, I hugged him tightly.
“Promise me you’ll never deceive me like that again.”
“I promise, Mom.”
“And Jake?”
“Yes?”
“Thank you for caring enough to see that I needed help.”
