I felt a chill.
Owen demonstrated by tapping his knuckles against the bedframe.
I felt a chill run down my spine.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I thought you’d make me take my decorations down. But Grandma said ghosts like Halloween stuff, and maybe mine were attracting one.”
“There’s no ghost coming.”
I stared at him.
“Grandma told you that?”
He nodded.
“She said if we took everything down, it would probably leave us alone. So I asked her to do it while we went shopping.”
“I don’t want that thing coming back.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry, Mom. I know I worked really hard, but I don’t want that thing coming back.”
I pulled him into my arms.
“You have nothing to apologize for. And I promise you, sweetheart, there’s no ghost coming to get you.”
I found Elaine putting on her coat.
