“Creative?!” Elaine shrieked. “Someone vandalized my house!”
The third judge studied her display.
“It’s not a theme!”
“Well, the witch theme is certainly convincing.”
A neighbor snorted. Elaine turned scarlet.
“It’s not a theme! I didn’t do this!”
I pressed my lips together. Owen was shaking beside me.
“You did this to my house!”
Then Elaine spotted us. Her eyes narrowed.
“You!”
I looked over my shoulder.
“Me?”
“You did this to my house!”
“Oh, Elaine,” I said, shaking my head. “And here I thought you’d decided to try something homemade this year.”
“You should ask your grandson.”
Someone behind the judges burst out laughing.
Elaine pointed at the toilet paper.
“I want all of this removed immediately!”
I raised my eyebrows.
“Before you get upset, Elaine, maybe you should ask your grandson why he wanted your house decorated.”
“Happy Halloween, Grandma!”
For a moment, she looked completely speechless.
