My 10-year-old son spent two weeks making Halloween decorations for our front porch #2

One judge looked past her.

“Well, Elaine, that’s certainly a bold new direction.”

I took a sip of coffee. Beside me, Owen made a strangled noise trying not to laugh.

Elaine’s entire front yard was covered in toilet paper.

“Someone has ruined everything!”

Long white ribbons hung from every tree, fluttering in the morning breeze.

Her expensive plastic skeletons were tangled in it, her bushes looked like giant cotton balls, and her enormous inflatable pumpkin had practically disappeared beneath the white layers.

But our masterpiece stood right beside her front door.

“Very creative use of everyday materials.”

A large cardboard sign with two words painted in crooked black letters:

“OLD HAG”

Underneath, Owen had drawn a witch with a crooked nose, enormous ears, and a broomstick.

One judge tilted his head.

“Is this supposed to be a witch’s cottage?”

“Someone vandalized my house!”

Another nodded approvingly.

“I actually love the toilet paper. Very creative use of everyday materials.”
