“We’re working on a Halloween surprise,” I replied.
He glanced at the bags. “Do I want to know?”
“Probably not.”
He sighed. “Just don’t make me bail you out.”
“Professional criminals don’t do that.”
Outside, the street was quiet.
We slipped toward Elaine’s property, keeping our voices low.
“Remember what we talked about,” I whispered.
Owen nodded solemnly. Then he nearly tripped over his own shoelace.
“Professional criminals don’t do that,” I informed him.
“You were good at this!”
“Professional criminals tie their kids’ shoes!”
I nearly burst out laughing. We got to work.
“Mom, I thought you said you were good at this!”
“I was! Twenty years ago!”
By the time we finished, my cheeks hurt from laughing.
I woke to someone screaming.
We hurried home with our empty bags.
Owen looked back once. “Do you think Grandma will like it?”
“Oh, sweetheart,” I said, unlocking our door. “I think she’s going to be speechless.”
