PART 2: The Recording Nobody Was Supposed to Find

I stared at Chloe, terrified that if I moved too quickly, the fragile hope she had given me would disappear.

"Sweetheart, did Aunt Leah bring the card?"

She nodded.

"She put it in an envelope."

I looked toward Nina Alvarez.

"My daughter says she brought something that could prove I'm innocent."

The social worker's expression changed.

"What kind of evidence?"

"A recording."

I struggled to steady my voice.

"Please call the warden."

One of the guards stepped forward.

"Elena, the visit is almost over."

I turned toward him.

"Then please don't waste another second."

Chloe gripped my hand.

"Mommy, did I do something wrong?"

I shook my head immediately.

"No, sweetheart."

I managed a smile.

"You might have done something very important."

Nina opened Chloe's bag and found a sealed envelope addressed to my defense attorney.

Leah had written a short note explaining that the memory card had been discovered beneath the music box's wooden base the previous evening.

She had attempted to contact my legal team but had been unable to reach the attorney immediately.

The note said she had brought the card because Chloe insisted her mother needed to know about it before anything else happened.

Nina read the note twice.

Then she requested assistance from the warden's office.

Within minutes, Robert Mitchell entered the visitation room.

He listened carefully while I explained what Chloe had told me.

When I mentioned Detective Daniel Price, his expression hardened.

"Are you saying the recording identifies misconduct connected to your murder investigation?"

"That's what my daughter heard."

Mitchell looked toward Nina.

"Contact her attorney immediately."

He turned to the guard.

"And make sure this envelope is preserved without anyone altering its contents."

My hands began shaking again.

For the first time since receiving my execution date, someone was treating my words as information worth investigating.

Chloe watched the adults move around the room.

"Are they going to help Mommy?"

Mitchell crouched beside her chair.

"We're going to make sure the right people see what you brought."

She looked directly at him.

"Before six o'clock?"

The warden's face changed.

He didn't answer immediately.

Then he said something I never forgot.

"We're going to try."

My attorney, Rebecca Shaw, arrived shortly afterward.

She had represented me during my final appeals and knew every page of the evidence against me.

When Mitchell explained what had been discovered, Rebecca asked to see the recording immediately.

The memory card was copied while the original was secured.

Then the video began playing.

The image showed Arthur Bell's office.

A timestamp indicated that it had been recorded two days before his murder.

Arthur stood behind his desk.

Across from him were two men.

I recognized Detective Daniel Price instantly.

The other man was Kenneth Hale, the prosecutor who would later stand before a jury and demand my execution.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Arthur's voice came through the speakers.

"I'm not signing off on those contracts."

Hale leaned forward.

"Arthur, you're making this unnecessarily difficult."

Arthur shook his head.

"Millions of dollars are missing."

Price stepped closer.

"Then maybe you should stop asking where they went."

Arthur's voice became sharper.

"I've already made copies."

Hale looked toward Price.

The detective smiled without warmth.

"Copies can disappear."

Arthur stared at him.

"And witnesses?"

Price folded his arms.

"They can be made to look unreliable."

The video continued.

Arthur said he intended to deliver his findings to outside investigators.

Hale warned him that doing so would destroy his career.

Then Price spoke again.

"Your assistant comes here all the time, doesn't she?"

My blood turned cold.

Arthur's expression changed.

"Leave Elena out of this."

Price smiled.

"Then stop forcing us to find another way to close the problem."

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Rebecca looked as though she had forgotten how to breathe.

Mitchell stood with both hands resting on the table.

I stared at the blank screen.

Five years earlier, I had told investigators that Arthur was frightened of something connected to his work.

They had dismissed my concerns.

Now I knew why.

The detective assigned to investigate his murder had threatened him only forty-eight hours before he died.

And the prosecutor who secured my conviction had been standing beside him.

Rebecca turned toward Mitchell.

"This recording was never disclosed to the defense."

Mitchell nodded grimly.

"Then the appropriate court needs to see it immediately."

Rebecca collected the copy and began preparing an emergency application for a stay of execution.

She explained that the recording was powerful evidence of undisclosed conflicts, possible misconduct, and a motive to frame me.

But she also warned that obtaining a stay would not be automatic.

"The court will need to assess the evidence."

I looked at the clock.

It was almost noon.

Only six hours remained.

Rebecca was already moving toward the door when her telephone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed as she listened.

"Who told you that?"

She paused.

"No, the original evidence is secure."

Another pause followed.

Then she slowly lowered the phone.

I felt dread return.

"What happened?"

Rebecca looked at Mitchell.

"Someone from the district attorney's office has already contacted my firm."

I stared at her.

"About the recording?"

She nodded.

"They know Chloe found it."

My heart began pounding.

Rebecca's voice became quiet.

"And they're demanding that we surrender the original before filing anything with the court."
