A wave of shocked whispers swept through the hall.
I looked at my husband and said calmly:
“Robert, I’m not throwing you out of the house. And I’m not throwing your mother out either. But from now on, no one will tell me where I’m allowed to sleep in my own home.”
Then I added:
“If your mother moves in with us, we’ll prepare a comfortable room for her and arrange the care she needs. But I will not give up our bedroom simply because you’ve decided to humiliate me.”
The guests burst into applause.
Our daughter rushed toward me and wrapped her arms around me.
Robert stood motionless, unable to speak.
But the most unexpected moment came next.
My mother-in-law walked toward me and took my hand in front of everyone.
“For fifty years, I’ve called this woman my daughter-in-law. But today I want to say something I’ve never said before. Margaret has become a daughter to me. And you, my son, failed to protect her tonight the way she’s protected you for so many years.”
