Evelyn looked at me.
“At that time, Margaret came to my house. She told me she was willing to sell the land she’d inherited from her mother, just so the children wouldn’t lose their home.”
Robert turned pale.
My mother-in-law continued:
“She paid off the entire debt. But she asked me to keep it a secret so you wouldn’t feel humiliated.”
I lowered my head.
It was true.
Robert had been going through a very difficult period, and I hadn’t wanted to add to his suffering.
But Evelyn wasn’t finished.
“And three weeks ago, I asked Margaret to do something else. I asked her to finally stop sacrificing everything for everyone else.”
Robert looked confused.
“Mom, what are you talking about?”
Evelyn stepped closer to the microphone.
“That house you just called yours belonged to both of you. But Margaret paid nearly all the debts connected to it over the years. And the share I acquired when we saved the house all those years ago? I recently transferred it legally into her name.”
