I Was Standing Behind the Door When I Heard My 82-Year-Old Father Tell My 19-Year-Old Daughter, ‘Sit on My Lap, Just Like When You Were Little. Don’t Be Afraid. No One Will Ever Know What We’re Going to Do.’ When My Daughter Said, ‘Grandpa, Please Let Go of My Hand,’ I Burst Into the Room. What I Saw Made My Knees Buckle, and I Collapsed to the Floor

“FIND OUT WHAT?”

He pointed toward the suitcase.

“Open the last envelope.”

My hands were shaking so badly that Lily had to help me.

Inside was an old hospital document.

I read the first line.

Then the second.

And my knees gave way.

I collapsed to the floor.

The document stated that on November 14, 1991, I had been admitted to the hospital following a serious car accident.

I remembered that day.

But I could barely remember anything about the following three months.

My father tried to get up from his wheelchair, but he couldn’t.

“Mariam, listen to me.”

I lifted my head.

“Why does that photograph say I died?”

He began crying.

“Because that day, the doctors told me you might never wake up again.”

I looked back at the photograph.

“But why is it here?”

My father remained silent for a long time.

“Because I had prepared it for your funeral.”
