I raised my 7 grandchildren alone after their parents’ funeral — 10 years later, my youngest granddaughter handed me a box and whispered, “Grandma, Mom and Dad didn’t die that night.”

*Please don’t tell her anything until we explain it ourselves.*

*Love, Dad and Mom.*

I read it twice.

Then I pulled out the last thing in the box.

It was a photograph of Silas and Bree standing outside a small motel.

On the back, someone had written a date six weeks after their supposed accident.

They were standing together, smiling at the camera.

My son was wearing the brown jacket I’d bought him for Christmas.

Bree had her arm around his waist.

I recognized every detail of their faces.

A scream came out of me before I could stop it.

Romy rushed around the table.

“Grandma!”

I could barely breathe.

For ten years, I’d stood beside their graves. I’d told seven children their parents were gone. I’d spent countless nights worrying about how to keep their family together.

And now I was staring at a picture that suggested both of them had been alive after their funeral.
