“Where did this come from?” I whispered.
Romy looked frightened.
“I think Miles hid it.”
I turned toward her.
“What?”
“He came over last month to get some things from the basement. I saw him moving the cabinet, and he got really upset when I asked what was behind it.”
My hands started shaking again.
Miles had known something.
I called him immediately.
He answered on the third ring.

“Miles, I need you to come over.”
“What’s wrong?”
I looked at the letter in front of me.
“I found the box.”
There was a long silence.
Then I heard him take a shaky breath.
“I’ll be there in twenty minutes.”
When he arrived, Romy was sitting beside me at the kitchen table.
Miles stopped in the doorway when he saw the photograph.
He looked exactly as frightened as he had at fifteen, when he’d come home from the funeral without saying a word.
