I dressed like a homeless man and walked into my own restaurant to see how my employees treated people who couldn’t afford a decent meal. I expected some unfriendly attitudes and perhaps a few rude remarks. Instead, I uncovered something so alarming that I eventually had to contact the police

Her granddaughter had helped her.

I promised to assist with any eligible losses or fees that hadn’t been reimbursed.

But Mrs. Zielinski wasn’t finished.

“The worst part wasn’t the money,” she said.

She explained that on her last visit to Dolly’s, she’d struggled to retrieve her payment card from her purse.

Brittany had grown impatient.

In front of several customers, she’d suggested that Mrs. Zielinski should bring someone capable of handling payments for her.

“She made me feel foolish,” Mrs. Zielinski whispered. “Like I was too old to be there.”

I felt ashamed.

“Your mother would never have treated me that way,” she added.

“No,” I admitted. “She wouldn’t.”

I waited before speaking again.

“Mrs. Z, may I pick you up after church this Sunday? I’ll bring you to Dolly’s, and we’ll have lunch together.”

She studied my face.

“Chicken and dumplings?”
