I carried a baby for my sister and her husband, but the moment they saw the little girl, they broke down and said, “This is not the child we wanted.” Right then, I decided to teach them a lesson they would never forget.

However, strange little occurrences continued to happen throughout the remaining months of the pregnancy, leaving tiny red flags that I foolishly failed to piece together at the time. During the lavish baby shower that Samantha organized at a country club in suburban Dublin, Ohio, I overheard Ronald speaking hushed words on his mobile phone in the hallway.

“If those test documents come back wrong, we are going to lose everything we have worked for, do you understand me?” Ronald hissed into the phone, his voice trembling with an intense panic that made me freeze near the doorway. “I am telling you right now that we will lose every single penny.”

When he turned around and spotted me standing near the restroom entrance, his tense demeanor instantly melted into a smooth, relaxed smile. “Just dealing with some frustrating health insurance paperwork, Alison,” he claimed effortlessly.

I gave him a simple nod and walked away without asking further questions, never once suspecting that I was being systematically used as an unsuspecting pawn in an elaborate financial scheme.
