“Then go ahead and ask me,” I replied, setting the pitcher down and looking back and forth between their anxious faces.
Samantha bit her lower lip nervously, struggling to find her voice before she finally leaned over the table to whisper her heartbreaking truth. “The fertility specialists in Cincinnati gave us their absolute final diagnosis this morning, and the results confirmed that my body simply cannot carry a pregnancy to full term.”
“Samantha, I am so truly sorry to hear that,” I murmured softly, wrapping my arms around her trembling shoulders to offer whatever comfort I could muster.
“I know you are,” Samantha sobbed into her hands before lifting her tear-streaked face to lock her eyes directly with mine. “However, there is still one remaining spark of hope left for us, and that hope is currently sitting directly across from me right now.”
At first, her cryptic statement did not make any sense to my mind, but as the silence stretched across the kitchen, a sudden wave of heavy comprehension hit me square in the chest. “You are asking me to become a surrogate mother and carry your biological child inside me.”
