I carried a baby for my sister and her husband, but the moment they saw the little girl, they broke down and said, “This is not the child we wanted.” Right then, I decided to teach them a lesson they would never forget.

My arms automatically pulled the baby tighter against my chest as I glared back at them. “What on earth are you two talking about right now?”

Samantha’s affectionate expression completely vanished, replaced by an icy stare as she looked down at the tiny human being resting in my arms as if she were looking at an unwanted stray animal. She took a step backward toward the exit door and uttered the cold words that shattered my heart into a thousand pieces.

“This is absolutely not the child that we wanted, Alison.”

“Pardon me?” I asked, my voice barely exceeding a breath as my heart skipped a beat.

“We were explicitly promised something entirely different,” Samantha declared coldly, turning her face toward the far wall as if looking at the baby caused her physical discomfort.

Ronald nodded in agreement, his hands trembling as he shoved them deep into his trousers pockets. “There has clearly been a catastrophic mistake made by the fertility specialists, Alison.”
