Daniel started crying.
“I’ve made mistakes, Dad. I’m in debt. I thought if I could get access to your money, I could fix everything.”
“Then you should have asked for help.”
“You would have said no.”
“Maybe. But I would have listened.”
He wiped his face.
“Please don’t tell Susan.”
I stared at him.
Even now, he was more concerned about what his wife might think than what he had done to me.
“Go home, Daniel.”
“Dad—”
“Please.”
For the first time in his life, my son left my house without arguing.
That afternoon, I called my lawyer.
We discussed protecting my finances, reviewing my estate plans, and making sure nobody could make decisions about my property without proper authorization.
I also contacted my bank and asked them to flag any unusual requests involving my accounts.
But the hardest call was to my daughter-in-law, Susan.
I told her what had happened.
