After the officers left, the nursing home employees apologized.
The woman looked genuinely upset.
“Mr. Robert, we never would have come if we’d known you were being pressured.”
I thanked her.
Then I turned toward Daniel.
He was standing beside the doorway, staring at the floor.
“Dad,” he whispered, “I didn’t mean for things to go this far.”
I felt tears burning behind my eyes.
“Then how far did you mean them to go?”
He didn’t answer.
I pointed toward the family portrait above the fireplace.
It showed Margaret, Daniel, and me on his eighteenth birthday.
“I worked fifty years so you would never have to struggle the way I did,” I said. “I paid for your education. I helped you buy a house. Every time you needed money, I gave it to you.”
My voice began trembling.
“But yesterday, you looked into my eyes and threatened to take away the only people I have left.”
