My hands began shaking.
Another message appeared.
**IT WAS INSIDE RUTH'S SAFE-DEPOSIT BOX.**
I stopped breathing.
Ruth had possessed Nina's original recorder.
The same device my father picked up from the hospital floor.
For years.
I stared at Avery.
Then my phone rang.
Detective Grant.
I answered.
"Hello?"
His voice was serious.
"Stacey, I need you to come to the station."
My stomach tightened.
"Why?"
"We've recovered the audio Nina recorded before she was injured."
I swallowed.
"And?"
He hesitated.
"There's a conversation involving your father, your mother, and Ruth."
My heart pounded.
"What does it say?"
A long silence followed.
Then Grant answered.
"Stacey, your grandmother was trying to stop something much worse than insurance fraud."
I couldn't breathe.
"What?"
He took a slow breath.
"Your parents weren't planning to keep you in the house forever."
My hands went numb.
"Then what were they planning?"
Grant's voice lowered.
"They'd arranged for you to be transferred to a private facility under another name."
