“Why?”
He leaned back in the chair and calmly replied:
“Because it’s just a card paper. We already live like husband and wife.”
And then he added a few more words.
And they made me realize that for the last ten years I have seen our relationship very differently than he did.
I didn’t make the scene.
I didn’t cry.
I didn’t beg.
I just nodded and said,
“Good.”
Michael even smiled.
It looked like he thought the conversation was over.
That, as always, I will be with him.
That the house, the joint bank account, the dog and ten years of memories tied me to him forever.
But that night, for the first time, I started thinking not about how to get Michael to change his mind.
But about what will happen if I stop waiting.
The next morning Michael went down to the kitchen and saw what I had left on the table.
He smiled first.
And then he read it.
And his face immediately changed.
Because there was no divorce document, no pictures of another man, no threats.
There was only one piece of paper.
And a list of things I planned to do in the next few days.
Michael has read it twice.
And then, for the first time in ten years, he looked at me not like a woman who wasn’t going anywhere.
But for a woman he could really lose.
“Laura… what is it?”
I put a cup of coffee in front of him.
“You said yourself that marriage is just a piece of paper.”
He looked at me.
And for the first time, he couldn’t find an answer.
But the most interesting part was at the bottom of the list.
There was one line there that Michael apparently didn’t expect.
And when he read it, he paled.
Because he realized: I had been preparing for this for a lot longer than he thought.
“Because marriage is just an insignificant piece of paper. It doesn’t change anything. If you need a legal deal to feel safe, that’s your problem, not mine.”
The woman at the next table turned around and looked towards us.
I felt my cheeks burning.
But I didn’t cry.
I didn’t raise my voice.
I just smiled and said,
“You’re right. A piece of paper doesn’t change anything.”
