Fifty Dollars to Film Her

Every head in that yard turned.

“Tyler put firecrackers under my chair!”

My voice cracked, but every word of it landed out there on the patio.

“It went off and I went down. Diane said ‘Good job.’ She filmed me. That video’s on her phone right now — she already sent it to relatives.”

The whole yard went dead quiet.

Diane’s smile froze on her face. Her fingers stopped at the edge of her phone case.

Mark grabbed my arm from behind.

“Nora. That’s enough.”

“Enough where?”

I yanked. Didn’t come loose.

Diane got her mouth working again, fast.

“Don’t listen to her. She mixed her pills with wine today. She was in there grabbing Tyler. Look at his arm — it’s all red.”

I whipped around.

“What wine? Where’s the glass? I’ll breathe in every single face out here. You smell alcohol on me, I lose. You don’t, you hand me that pill bottle.”
