A knock hit the door.
A guest’s voice came through the wood.
“Everything okay? What’s taking so long in there?”
Mark’s face changed.
He bent my wrist up behind my back.
“Stand straight.”
Diane pocketed her phone and smoothed her hair.
“Smile.”
Mark opened the door.
Hall light cut across the floor. A dozen pairs of eyes landed on his face.
He opened his mouth.
Mark’s smile came out into the hall first. Pasted on.
“She’s just a little low on blood sugar, folks, don’t—”
Behind him, Diane’s voice slid through the crack of the door.
“She’s crazy. She was just in there grabbing Tyler and wouldn’t let go.”
I put my shoulder into Mark and shoved past him. Ran back out to the patio.
Red firecracker paper was still scattered all over the grass.
The lounge chair was knocked sideways where I went down. My pill bag had a black shoe print on it.
