“I haven’t had a single drink. All day today I couldn’t even finish one cup of coffee.”
Diane laughed.
“Then why are you shaking?”
I looked down at my own hands. Explaining suddenly felt ridiculous.
“Give me my pills. Please.”
I heard myself say “please.” Something cold settled in my stomach.
Diane unscrewed the cap, shook two pills into her palm, and closed her fist around them.
“When you ask for something, ask like you mean it. When we go back out, you tell everyone the truth. You got emotional. You misunderstood Tyler.”
“I didn’t misunderstand anything.”
“Then keep hurting.”
From the hallway — Tyler, crying.
I shoved Diane’s hand away and ran.
Tyler stood at the end of the hall, sleeve pushed up past his elbow. A fresh red ring circled his forearm, the edges already swollen.
He saw me and hid his arm behind his back.
