“You should’ve thought about that.”
The kitchen door swung open.
Diane came in with my pill bag. Behind her in the hallway her suitcase lay wide open, clothes spilling out over the edges.
“Where’s my phone?”
I held out my hand.
“The pills and the phone. You’re not keeping either one.”
Diane took the bottle out of the bag and held it up over the sink. Slow. Deliberate.
“Delete the video first. Then we talk about pills.”
“You’re the one who took the video.”
“The video is evidence.”
She shook the bottle. The little white pills rattled inside.
“Didn’t you just have chest pain? Talk first.”
Mark stood right there. He didn’t argue.
I looked at him.
“You think holding my medicine hostage is fine too?”
Mark wouldn’t meet my eyes.
“Mom just wants you to calm down.”
The pressure in my throat hurt.
