“Every Time I Left the House, My Husband Closed the Kitchen Door and Told My 8-Year-Old Daughter, ‘Good Girl, Just Like That. Keep Moving Your Hands. Don’t Stop. A Little More, Until You Finish.’ When I Asked My Daughter What They Were Doing While I Was Away, She Whispered Fearfully, ‘Mommy, John Told Me Not to Tell You Anything.’”

“John… where did you find this?”

“I found the buyer’s name in some old paperwork. The piano was still with his family. I told them your story, and they agreed to sell it back to me.”

I placed my hand on the familiar scratch.

“But why?”

John’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I know how much you miss David. I don’t want to replace him. I just want you to be able to remember him without so much pain.”

At that moment, Emily approached the piano.

“Mommy, sit down. You haven’t seen the most important part yet.”

She sat down in front of the keys.

I looked at John in surprise.

“But Emily doesn’t know how to play the piano.”

“We’ve been practicing for a few months,” he replied.

And suddenly, everything made sense.

Those mysterious instructions, the hand movements, the repeated attempts…

John had been teaching my daughter to play the piano.
