“Every Time I Left the House, My Husband Closed the Kitchen Door and Told My 8-Year-Old Daughter, ‘Good Girl, Just Like That. Keep Moving Your Hands. Don’t Stop. A Little More, Until You Finish.’ When I Asked My Daughter What They Were Doing While I Was Away, She Whispered Fearfully, ‘Mommy, John Told Me Not to Tell You Anything.’”

In front of her was a small wooden box, colorful paints, and brushes. And in the corner of the room, something large was covered with an old sheet.

“Mary, please, calm down,” John said.

I wrapped my arms around my daughter.

“Emily, sweetheart, what’s going on here?”

“Mommy, we wanted to surprise you,” she whispered.

John approached the table.

“Mary, I made a mistake. I shouldn’t have asked Emily to keep a secret from you. But please, look at this first.”

He handed me the wooden box.

Written on it in Emily’s handwriting were the words:

“To Mommy, for everything she lost because of us.”

I opened the lid.

Inside was a small wooden butterfly with unevenly painted wings. Attached to its center was a tiny silver pendant.

I recognized it immediately.

It was my mother’s favorite pendant.

My mother had passed away twelve years earlier. I had lost that pendant seven years ago and never found it again.
