“Every Time I Left the House, My Husband Closed the Kitchen Door and Told My 8-Year-Old Daughter, ‘Good Girl, Just Like That. Keep Moving Your Hands. Don’t Stop. A Little More, Until You Finish.’ When I Asked My Daughter What They Were Doing While I Was Away, She Whispered Fearfully, ‘Mommy, John Told Me Not to Tell You Anything.’”

The kitchen suddenly went silent.

When I walked in, Emily was sitting at the table, and John was standing beside her.

There was nothing on the table.

“We were just playing,” my husband said.

But my daughter’s eyes were filled with tears.

That night, after John had fallen asleep, I sat beside Emily’s bed.

“Sweetheart, you can tell me anything. Is John making you do something you don’t want to do?”

Emily remained silent for a long time.

Then she whispered:

“When you’re not home, he takes me to the downstairs room. He says I have to move my hands the right way. When I make a mistake, we have to start again.”

My throat tightened.

“Then why haven’t you told me?”

My daughter lowered her head.

“Because John said that if Mommy finds out, everything will be ruined. He also said it’s our secret.”
