My stomach tightened.
“Then tell me now.”
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Emily reached into her handbag and pulled out a small envelope.
She placed it on the table between us.
“I need you to look at these.”
Inside were several photocopied documents, some dating back many years.
Bank statements.
Transfer confirmations.
And documents bearing a signature I recognized instantly.
Daniel’s.
I stared at the papers, struggling to understand what I was seeing.
“Why do you have documents with my husband’s signature?”
Emily swallowed hard.
“After Daniel died, I came across something I was never supposed to find.”
I looked at her in confusion.
“What are you talking about?”
She pointed to one of the statements.
“Daniel had been transferring money into an account you didn’t know existed. But the account wasn’t registered under his name.”
My fingers tightened around the papers.
Daniel and I had shared almost everything during our marriage.
