I laughed, assuming she was teasing me.
But Emily didn’t laugh.
Instead, I noticed that her hand was trembling.
“Emily? What’s wrong?”
She turned toward the ocean, remaining silent for what felt like an eternity.
Finally, she leaned closer and whispered words that sent a chill down my spine.
“Tomorrow, you’ll discover who I really was in your life.”
Suddenly, the woman I had trusted for thirty-seven years felt like a complete stranger.
I barely slept that night.
The following morning, I woke earlier than usual and found Emily sitting beside the window, staring at the ocean with a cup of coffee between her hands.
She looked exhausted, as though she hadn’t slept at all.
I stood in the doorway.
“You knew you were going to tell me something yesterday, didn’t you?”
She slowly nodded.
“Yes,” she replied. “I just couldn’t find the courage to say it.”
