Frank stopped for a moment.
“And I couldn’t read the words.”
I pressed the phone closer.
“I decided I didn’t want to keep needing another person to stand between me and what my grandson was trying to say.”
For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
Then I told him I was proud of him for trying.
He cleared his throat.
“Don’t get too sentimental, Sandy. I’m still pretty terrible at it.”
I laughed through the tears.
The following morning, Frank invited me to visit the learning center.
When I arrived, he was sitting at a table with his bright green dinosaur lunchbox beside him.
He looked up.
“Don’t start laughing.”
“I wasn’t going to.”
“You were considering it.”
“Maybe a little.”
He grinned.
Eliam sat nearby, his laptop resting beside him.
Frank reached into his folder and pulled out a birthday card.
On the front was a colorful dinosaur wearing a party hat.
