My mother lowered her eyes.
I stared at her in confusion.
Dr. Brooks continued.
“That person was Evelyn Parker.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
My mother, who worked long hours cleaning floors, had helped finance a college program?
Then she explained.
Years earlier, my mother had received a modest insurance payment after my father’s death. Rather than spend all of it, she’d contributed part of the money to a fund that helped students who couldn’t afford transportation, meals, or basic supplies.
She had asked that her involvement remain anonymous.
My eyes filled with tears.
But the greatest surprise came next.
Dr. Brooks looked directly at Vanessa.
“Your first semester’s emergency assistance came from that very fund.”
Vanessa went completely still.
“You mean…” she whispered.
“Yes,” Dr. Brooks answered. “The woman you tried to destroy helped you stay in college when your family was struggling.”
