For Margaret I was just the woman sitting in the 34B seat.
And, interestingly, I liked it.
Because that experience had taught me something I would never forget.
The true measure of character does not appear when we know that we are facing someone powerful.
It appears when we think we are facing someone who can't do anything to us.
Vanessa was nice to Ethan because she knew who she was.
He was cruel to me because he thought he was nobody.
Marcus respected me only when he understood how much his family needed my hands.
And many people at the airport started apologizing only when they discovered my name.
Therefore, of all the things that happened that day, I will never forget the phrase that I heard the most after:
“If we had known who it was...”
But that phrase was never an apology.
It was a confession.
Because it meant that their behavior would have been different if they had known I had power.
