For years, Daniel had imagined what would happen if she ever discovered the truth.
He had pictured tears.
Accusations.
Threats.
Maybe Claire calling his mother.
Maybe her throwing his clothes onto the driveway of their house in Evanston.
He had prepared himself for anger.
He had never prepared himself for calm.
“You can come home when you’re finished,” Claire said.
That was all.
Daniel stared at her.
“What?”
Claire gave him a small, almost polite smile.
“Good night, Daniel.”
She turned around.
“Claire, wait.”
She didn’t.
She crossed the street, climbed into her car, and drove away.
Daniel remained on the sidewalk as her taillights disappeared into traffic.
Sabrina slowly released his arm.
“Who was that?”
Daniel looked at her as if he had forgotten she existed.
“My wife.”
Sabrina’s expression hardened.
“Your wife knows about me?”
Daniel still couldn’t stop staring down the road.
“I don’t know.”
