For years, Daniel had defined his entire worth through billable hours, executive stature, and high-stakes financial consulting. Yet looking at the inbox filled with urgent demands, the entire enterprise felt hollow, meaningless, and thoroughly dead.
Sabrina called again at seven o’clock, and this time Daniel pressed the green button and raised the phone. Her voice sounded sharp with impatience. “Daniel, where are you? We were supposed to spend the weekend in Wisconsin.”
“The weekend is canceled,” Daniel said flatly, his voice hollow and stripped of all the charm he once used. “Everything between us is finished, Sabrina. Do not call this number again, and do not come to my office.”
“You cannot be serious,” Sabrina scoffed loudly. “She walked away! You’re finally free to live without looking over your shoulder.”
“I wasn’t trapped, Sabrina,” Daniel said quietly, leaning his head against the cold cabinet. “I was protected by a good woman, and I was too foolish, arrogant, and blind to understand what that was worth.”
