The Quiet Promise Sister Esperanza Could No Longer Remember - usnews

Doctor Mateo Serrano was already there.

He was in his late fifties, with graying hair and a careful manner. He rose when they entered.

Mother Caridad noticed immediately that he wore no ring.

“Doctor,” Paloma said.

“Paloma.”

Their greeting was polite but strained.

Elena offered tea.

No one accepted at first.

Then Esperanza said, “Yes, please.”

The ordinary request seemed to release everyone from a held breath.

Elena went to the kitchen.

Esperanza remained standing.

Her gaze moved over the room.

A framed photograph on the mantel showed Elena beside a man with kind eyes and a broad smile. Another showed Elena alone beside the sea.

There were no photographs of children.

Mother Caridad noticed.

So did Esperanza.

“Gabriel?” she asked when Elena returned.

Elena followed her gaze.

“He died two years ago.”

“I am sorry.”

“Thank you.”

She set the tea tray down.

“He knew about you. He always hoped you would remember him kindly.”
