Emiliano Duarte turned off the lights of his residence in Lomas de Chapultepec, took a suitcase and kissed his 2 daughters as if that morning were completely normal.
“It will only be 3 days,” he promised with a calm smile. Be good.
Daniela, 11, hugged him tightly. Martina, 7, stuck to her chest a few more seconds, clinging to a stuffed rabbit.
None of them knew that his father was lying.
The private plane never took off to Europe. There was no business meeting, hotel booked or dinner with investors.
Less than 1 hour later, Emiliano returned by the service entrance accompanied only by Ramiro, his head of security.
I didn't want to surprise anyone.
I wanted to watch.
The night before, Patricia, her fiancée, had dropped a suspicion during dinner.
“You trust Rosa too much,” he said quietly. He steals things from you and is manipulating the girls to turn them against me.
Emiliano didn't want to believe him.
Rosa had been working in the house for almost 5 years. He was discreet, responsible and knew every detail of the girls: how Daniela liked the muffins, what song calmed Martina and where they kept their tasks.
But Patricia had been sowing doubts for weeks.
First a bracelet disappeared.
She then said that the girls obeyed the employee more than she was.
He then said that Rosa was checking drawers, listening to conversations and behaving as if the house belonged to her.
The doubt did not come in suddenly. It slowly got in, like moisture from a wall.
That's why Emiliano faked the trip.
From a hidden monitoring room, he observed the cameras installed in the common spaces of the residence.
At first, everything seemed normal.
Rosa lifted the breakfast dishes. Daniela finished her milk. Martina colored a drawing. The gardeners left and the driver closed the gate.
Then Patricia showed up in the room.
His face changed, he hardly thought Emiliano was far away.
The elegant smile disappeared.
“What did I tell you about sitting here?” he said.
The girls jumped off the scare.
Daniela closed her book immediately. Martina looked down and squeezed her rabbit.
They didn't react like girls surprised by a scolding.
They reacted like girls who already knew what was coming.
Patricia ripped Martina's stuffed animal out and threw it into the chair.
“When your dad is gone, I command here. Did you understand?
Daniela approached her sister and took her hand.
Rosa came in from the hallway.
“Miss Patricia, they didn’t do anything wrong.
Patricia turned with a fury that froze Emiliano in front of the screens.

"No, ma'am.
“Then remember your place.
Rosa did not respond, but stood in front of the girls.
Patricia smiled in a strange way, opened her bag and pulled out a velvet box.
Emiliano recognized the missing bracelet.
The woman walked into Rosa’s room and, looking directly at the girls, said:
“Today they’re going to learn what happens when someone tries to take away what’s mine.
