Silas went quiet. "All of it?"
"The missing money. The motel photos. My mother's brooch."
Everett paused.
"And find Naomi. Find out where she's been living." "Find out about those twins. I want everything."
Silas didn't ask why Everett suddenly cared, a year after signing the divorce papers. He'd seen this before, in other clients, other cases. Sometimes the truth waited quietly for exactly the right moment to surface. His job was just to go find it, whenever that moment finally arrived.
That evening, Silas called back. Something in his voice had shifted.
"I found something."
Everett stood beside his desk. "What?"
"Eleven months ago, Naomi checked into Briar Hollow General." "She was pregnant with twins."
Everett stopped moving.
Silas kept going. "She listed you as her emergency contact."
Everett read that line twice, his eyes catching on the word before his brain fully processed it. Emergency contact meant she still trusted him, underneath everything. Even after he'd told her to leave and never looked back. That single fact sat heavier in his chest than anything else Silas had said so far.
