That flight to Chicago changed the course of my life – Habemus Asado

The Tyler had been flying commercial planes for almost nine years, and somehow, in all that time, our seven-year-old son Mason had never boarded one of his flights. That detail was eaten up inside. Every time his father packed his travel suitcase, Mason followed him around the house like a shadow, with the same stack of repeated questions until fatigue.lksr

“You fly the big plane today, Dad?”

“Not today, champion, but sometimes you do.

“And the passengers know you’re my dad?”

“Truly, no.lk

Why not?

Tyler always let out a short laugh and said the same thing, “Maybe some of them will meet you one day.

The idea that seemed innocent

When Tyler mentioned passing that he would have a short flight to Chicago on a Saturday, with a few hours of rest before returning that same night, I came up with the perfect surprise. I bought two tickets on your flight without telling you anything. Mason almost exploded with emotion when I secretly explained the plan.

Are we going to surprise Dad?

When we land.

Can I get into the cabin?

If the crew allows it.

“No way. He recognizes you from afar.

Mason took the secret more seriously than anything else in his life. He packed headphones, sweet gummies, a toy plane and a drawing he had made with a marker. In it was Tyler standing in front of a plane and, above, in huge and crooked letters, he had written: “THE BEST PILOT IN THE WORLD.”

The airport nearly ruined the surprise. We were headed for safety when Mason pulled my sleeve with his eyes like plates. Tyler was crossing the terminal less than ten meters away, with his flawless uniform and his flight suitcase rolling behind. I dragged him by the hand to a souvenir shop and hid behind a sweatshirt coat rack. Mason was shaking with a contained laugh. “This is the best thing in the world,” he whispered. At that moment I felt lighter than I had felt in months. Today, when I remember that laughter of yours, everything turns inside me.

Voice from the speakers

We approach almost in the end. Our seats were left to the bottom, and Mason glued his forehead to the window glass as if he were about to see a miracle. When the cabin door closed, the speakers creaked and Tyler’s voice came welcoming. Mason's face lit up whole.
