Then Emma unfolded the letter and began reading.
“Dear Felix, your teachers have told me how hard you’re working despite everything you’re facing. Your determination makes you a valued member of our school community. Whatever the future holds, I hope you remember that you will always have a place among your classmates.”
The letter was signed by Principal William himself.
He had written it while Felix was hospitalized, encouraging him during one of his longest stays.
Emma looked directly at him.
“You told my brother he would always have a place here. Then why was it so hard to let me remember him today?”
William lowered his eyes.
“I was trying to keep the ceremony fair,” he said.
“Fair to whom?” Emma asked.
“I’m not asking you to pretend Felix graduated. I’m asking you to remember he was here.”
