Elias has strained.
“What?”
“Your father had a sister.”
Elias felt the room bowing.
"No."
"Yes."
“What is her name?”
“Eleanor.”
Elias knew that name.
A portrait.
His father had kept her hidden in a trunk.
A young girl next to him.
He had always assumed he was a cousin.
David whispered, “Eleanor Vance Creed was my mother.”
Mara looked from David to Elias.
Then to the twins.
The truth came to light slowly.
If David was their father, the girls wore both lines.
But David said they weren't his.
“Then why say they’re not yours?” asked for Mara.
David looked awful.
“Because my father showed me something else.”
“What?”
“A birth certificate.”
He looked at Elias.
“For you.”
Elis' hand has been held in the rifle.
“My birth document?”
David nodded.
“Write that Thomas Vance wasn’t your father.”
Quiet.
Then Elias said very slowly:
“Who was it?”
