PART 2: What Lay Down the Stairs

The foul, damp air rushed up the stairwell, making me cover my nose as my eyes adjusted to the dim light.

Grace stood beside me, completely unfazed, holding my sleeve with her small hand. “Go down,” she whispered softly. “Mom is always sitting in the corner when Dad goes to work.”

I took a deep breath, reached for the light switch beside the doorframe, and flipped it. A single flickering bulb illuminated a set of concrete steps leading down into the darkness.

Step by step, I descended, my hand trembling against the cold wooden handrail.

At the bottom of the stairs sat a large, windowless room filled with old furniture covered in dust sheets, stacked cardboard boxes, and forgotten toys. But in the far corner, illuminated by the low glow of a plug-in nightlight, was a fully furnished living space.

There was a small cot with fresh blankets, a chemical toilet behind a screen, and a small table covered in crayons, drawings, and worn books.

Sitting on the edge of the cot was a thin, frail woman with hollow eyes and matted  hair, dressed in oversized clothes.

She looked up at the sound of my footsteps, her eyes wide with terror, and raised her arms to shield her face.

“Please,” she whimpered, her voice raspy and broken. “I didn’t try to leave… I didn’t touch the lock…”

What was the truth about Daniel’s late wife? Continue reading Part 3 below to unearth the truth.

PART 3: The Secret in the Cellar

I dropped to my knees in front of her, my mind spinning into complete chaos.

“Who are you?” I gasped, my voice barely audible. “Daniel said… he told me his wife died in a car accident four years ago!”

The woman slowly lowered her arms, staring at me with tears welling in her tired eyes.

“I am his wife,” she whispered, her hands shaking violently. “My name is Sarah.”

Marriage

She revealed the horrifying truth: four years ago, after a bitter argument where she threatened to leave him and take the girls, Daniel had staged her disappearance during a storm. He crashed her car near the river to simulate a fatal accident where her body was lost to the current, while secretly keeping her imprisoned in the basement beneath his own home.

For four long years, he had kept her isolated, bringing her food late at night after the girls were asleep, manipulating her mind, and forcing her to live in silence while telling the children their mother was “resting.”
