Part 2: My son h.i.t me 30 times in front of his wife… so the next morning, while he sat in his office, I sold the house he thought was his.

Held him at his baptism.

Taught him to drive a manual transmission in an empty construction yard.

He used to call him Trev.

Now he was meeting secretly with Trevor's wife.

“What do you think Kristen is doing?”

Daniel answered carefully.

“Based on the documents we've seen, I don't think the goal was only borrowing against River Oaks.”

“Then what?”

“I think they were preparing to shift several Cedarline properties into entities you did not control.”

“For what?”

“Leverage.”

“Sale.”

“Collateral.”

“Possibly a forced internal buyout.”

I stared.

“They were trying to take Cedarline.”

“Yes.”

The word sat between us.

Not all of it.

Enough.

Then Daniel said:

“There is something else.”

Apparently that phrase had become the anthem of my life.

“What?”

He pulled out the attempted $1.8 million River Oaks loan.

“Trevor signed a personal guaranty.”

I frowned.

“So?”

“Kristen didn't.”

I looked at him.

Daniel continued.

“On the property-transfer documents, Trevor assumes almost all liability.”
