Part 2: My son h.i.t me 30 times in front of his wife… so the next morning, while he sat in his office, I sold the house he thought was his.

She told me it belonged to a friend.

I hadn't thought about that moment in sixty years.

Now I couldn't stop thinking about it.

I looked at Detective Grant.

"Are you saying Malcolm's wife is my sister?"

She hesitated.

"According to the records we've located, Eleanor Whitmore is married to Malcolm."

My stomach dropped.

Then Grant continued.

"And the original birth records suggest she and you were born to the same mother."

I couldn't breathe.

For thirty-two years, my business partner had apparently been married to my twin sister.

A sister I never knew existed.

A sister who looked exactly like me.

A sister who had been pretending to be me.

And neither of them had ever told me.

***

I drove home with my hands trembling.

I couldn't stop thinking about the years.

Thirty-two years of partnership.

Thirty-two years of lunches.

Meetings.

Birthday celebrations.

Malcolm attending Henry's funeral.

Malcolm watching Trevor grow into adulthood.
